Firstly there may not be a letterflap in the front door and therefore a surface mounted or free-standing mailbox externally would be ideal, for either aesthetic, practical or security reasons.
Secondly you may want to adopt the security guidelines in the Secured By Design Homes 2016 guide, by having a secure receptacle for mail externally and removing the need of the letterflap.
If it is this option then you may already have an existing letterflap in your door so a product such as Flaplock™ could be easily fitted to lock off your letterflap internally, providing peace of mind.
